FragPunk – Another 5v5 Shooter

Alright, let’s dive into FragPunk. Oh great, another 5v5 multiplayer shooter. It feels like we’re swimming in them these days, right? But stick with me, because FragPunk actually brings a few refreshing elements to the table.

Let’s be honest, the trailer and intro for FragPunk look pretty amazing. The world is vibrant, colourful, and the music is genuinely cool. What really caught my attention, though, is what it isn’t. This isn’t some crazy bunny-hopping and wall-running shooter. Nope, you’re firmly on the ground with both feet, which is a surprisingly refreshing change of pace. I, for one, am not a fan of those hyper-mobile shooters; they can get pretty annoying. Thankfully, FragPunk keeps things grounded.

Now, here’s where things get a little… interesting. The UI can be a bit overwhelming, and the random heroes (called Lancers in the game) you get throughout the games? I had absolutely no clue what half of them did. What were their skills? Their abilities? Your guess is as good as mine. So, I spent most of my time trying to figure things out on the fly. And honestly, for most of my playtime, I was pretty lost. But here’s the kicker: for some reason, I was consistently landing in the top 3 players. Maybe everyone else was just as confused as I was? It’s a mystery!

Shard Cards: The Game Changer

This is where FragPunk truly tries to differentiate itself: Shard Cards. There are over 150 of these, and they completely change the game. Imagine having unlimited ammo, an extra life, or a host of other advantages over the opposing team. These cards are designed to break the traditional rules of combat, ensuring that no two rounds ever feel the same. You don’t collect them or build a deck; instead, before each round, the game randomly draws a few cards for you, and you choose the ones that you think will give you the most edge. They can even combine and counter each other, adding a surprising layer of tactical depth to the classic bomb-defuse experience. And the best part? Every Shard Card is completely free for all players – no paywalls here!

Lancers, Duels, and Endless Variety

Beyond the Shard Cards, FragPunk offers a diverse roster of “Lancers,” each with their own unique skills, personalities, and other stuff. Whether you like blowing things up with a rocket launcher, setting traps, backstabbing from the shadows, or even piloting a drone tank, there’s likely a Lancer for your playstyle. The game also features an exciting “Duel” phase after a tie, where players face off in an intense 1v1 showdown – a true test of individual skill. This can even be played as a separate mode in the Arcade.

Speaking of the Arcade, it’s packed with various modes that rotate weekly, keeping the action fresh. You can defend humanity, turn humans into zombies in “Outbreak,” or test your weapon skills in single-weapon-type modes like melee battles or sniper duels. There’s a lot of variety to explore, and you can also slap stickers on your guns, name card, or even your Lancer’s head for some extra flair.

The Verdict

FragPunk definitely looks promising, especially if you’re someone who enjoys diving deep into a game and learning its intricacies. The vibrant visuals and immersive maps are a definite plus. However, for me, one evening with the game was enough. I ended up deleting it and probably won’t go back. There are already plenty of other multiplayer shooters out there that either do things better or simply suit my personal preferences more. While the Shard Cards are a cool concept, the initial overwhelming UI and the struggle to understand all the Lancers made it a bit of a hurdle. But hey, if you’re looking for a fresh take on the 5v5 shooter genre with a unique card mechanic and you’re willing to invest the time, FragPunk might just be worth a look. Just be prepared for a bit of a learning curve!
